dental hygiene
A little pain after having a tooth removed is normal. Dry socket feels different. The pain often becomes stronger a days after the extraction instead of gradually settling down and it can spread towards your ear or the side of your face.
So if you felt reasonably okay after the extraction and then suddenly things got much worse pay attention. Your mouth is giving you a clear clue.
What Does Dry Socket Feel Like?
Most extraction pain should slowly improve. With socket the opposite can happen. The pain may become throbbing and ordinary pain relief doesn’t seem to do much. It can also feel like the pain is coming from deeper inside the jaw.
Another clue is timing. Dry socket usually develops a days after an extraction often around two to five days later. The area may have seemed fine at first. Then the pain. Refuses to behave.
Look Inside the Extraction Site
• A ache that keeps getting worse rather than easing especially after the first couple of days.
• The socket looks unusually empty with bone possibly visible of the dark blood clot you expected to see.
• Pain travelling towards your ear or temple which is a detail but a fairly common dry socket complaint.
• Bad. An unpleasant taste that doesn’t disappear after brushing.
Dry Socket Isn’t the Same, as Healing
This is where people often get confused. An extraction site can look pretty unpleasant while its healing. There can be swelling, tenderness and a little bleeding during the first day.
The overall direction matters. If each day feels slightly easier that’s reassuring. If you were improving and then the pain suddenly ramps up dry socket becomes more likely.
Don’t keep poking the hole with your tongue or trying to inspect it every few minutes. It’s tempting. It also irritates the area. Doesn’t tell you much.
What Should You Do If You Think You Have Dry Socket?
Don’t try to scrape or clean the socket yourself.. Don’t put random household remedies into the hole. That advice gets passed around online too casually.
Contact your dentist if the pain is severe or getting worse after an extraction. They can check the socket. If it is dry socket clean the area and place a medicated dressing that usually brings noticeable relief.
You should also seek dental help if you have significant swelling, fever, trouble swallowing or difficulty breathing. Those symptoms need assessment because they can point to an infection or another complication.
