How to Get Rid of Dental Plaque

2 min read

Start With Better Brushing

A quick scrub isn’t enough. Spend two minutes brushing your teeth twice a day and keep the brush angled slightly toward the gumline. That’s where plaque loves to hide.

Use a bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Move gently than pressing hard because aggressive brushing doesn’t make your teeth cleaner. It can irritate your gums. Wear away enamel over time.

Don’t Forget the Places Your Brush Misses

• Flossing a day preferably before brushing gets into those narrow gaps where bristles simply can’t reach.

• An interdental brush is worth trying if you have spaces between your teeth. It feels strange at first then you stop noticing it.

Mouthwash can be useful too one containing fluoride.. Don’t treat it as a replacement for brushing or cleaning between your teeth. Swishing for 30 seconds doesn’t undo plaque thats stuck to a tooth.

Make Plaque Harder to Build Up

What you eat matters because plaque bacteria feed on sugars left around your mouth. You don’t need to live on salads or swear off dessert forever. Just avoid grazing on sugary foods and drinks throughout the day.

Water is a habit here. After eating drinking some water helps wash loose food particles and keeps your mouth from feeling coated. Sugar-free gum can also increase saliva flow, which naturally helps clean the mouth.

What If Plaque Has Already Hardened?

This is where people get frustrated. You may brush regularly. Still notice a hard yellow or brown deposit around your teeth particularly near the gums. That’s likely tartar called dental calculus.

Once plaque hardens into tartar brushing won’t remove it. Trying to scrape it off yourself isn’t worth the risk either. You could damage your gums or enamel. Make the area more irritated.

Watch Your Gums

Plaque doesn’t only affect the teeth. If it stays around the gumline your gums may become red, swollen, tender or prone to bleeding during brushing.

Don’t panic over one day.. Bleeding that keeps happening deserves attention. Persistent bad breath or gums that pull away from your teeth are also reasons to book a check-up.

The Routine That Makes Sense

You don’t need a routine. Brush with fluoride toothpaste daily. Clean between your teeth once a day. Drink water regularly, after meals and keep sugary snacking from becoming an all-day habit.
