dental hygiene
Spotted a small dark mark on a tooth or your dentist mentioned caries, don’t panic. Just means tooth decay, right treatment depends on how far it’s gone. Early caries is sometimes managed without drilling at all. Once a cavity’s formed though, that damaged part needs proper treatment.
Can You Fix It At Home
This is where it gets confusing. Can slow down early decay at home, can’t brush away an actual cavity though. Fluoride toothpaste’s your best everyday tool, strengthens weakened enamel, makes it harder for decay to progress further.
Fluoride toothpaste twice daily. Spit after brushing rather than rinsing right away so fluoride stays on your teeth longer. Clean between your teeth too, food and plaque sit in places a toothbrush just can’t reach.
What To Change Right Now
Cutting how often you have sugary food and drinks matters more than obsessing over one snack. Sugar reaches your teeth, bacteria produce acid attacking enamel, frequent snacking keeps repeating that cycle.
Fluoride toothpaste every day, routine matters more than some fancy brand. Sugary drinks worth tackling first, especially sipped for hours. Between the teeth is where things often get missed, clean those spaces daily too.
What Happens If There’s Already A Cavity
Decay’s created an actual hole, home care isn’t rebuilding missing tooth structure. Dentist usually removes the decayed material, restores it with a filling.
Deeper decay, treatment gets more involved. Might need a root canal before restoring it, and if badly damaged, sometimes a crown to protect what’s left.
Early Decay Is A Different Story
Doesn’t always mean needing a filling. Enamel’s started losing minerals but no cavity yet, dentist might recommend fluoride treatment and closer monitoring while you improve daily cleaning.
That’s one reason checking early’s such a good idea honestly. Might be dealing with a weak spot rather than a hole needing drilling.
Don’t Wait For Toothache
Caries develops without obvious symptoms often too, especially at first. By the time there’s persistent toothache, sensitivity, or swelling, decay’s often already fairly advanced.
Can Caries Actually Go Away
Early enamel damage can sometimes reverse through remineralization, especially with fluoride involved and the causes controlled. A formed cavity’s different though, that damaged area isn’t growing back from brushing harder.
Don’t try scraping the dark area yourself either. Could damage the tooth and still leave the decay right there.
