How to Get Rid of Calculus on Teeth?

2 min read

Calculus is the hard, rough buildup that forms when plaque stays on your teeth and turns solid. Dentists often call it tartar. Once it has hardened, brushing alone won’t shift it. You can scrub at it for ages and still feel that stubborn patch with your tongue.

Why Calculus Is So Hard to Remove

Plaque starts off soft. If you don’t remove it properly, minerals in your saliva can harden it into calculus. It tends to collect close to the gumline, where brushing is often a bit rushed.

And once calculus has formed, trying to scrape it off yourself isn’t a great idea. Using a pin, nail, metal tool, or anything similar can damage your enamel or gums. The internet has plenty of strange dental hacks. Most aren’t worth trying.

What Actually Removes It

A professional dental cleaning is the reliable way to get rid of hardened calculus. A dentist or dental hygienist uses special instruments to break the deposits away from the tooth surface without damaging the tooth underneath.

What Happens During a Dental Cleaning?

If the calculus has built up heavily, you may need more than a quick routine cleaning. Some deposits sit below the gumline and require deeper cleaning. Your dentist will check the gums and decide what treatment is needed.

How to Stop Calculus Coming Back

You can’t permanently remove the possibility of calculus because plaque keeps forming every day. What you can do is stay ahead of it.

Brush carefully along the gumline rather than only cleaning the obvious front surfaces. Clean between your teeth every day too. And don’t wait until the buildup feels rough before booking a dental check.

Regular cleaning is honestly much easier than trying to fight a thick layer of tartar later. Once you’ve had that smooth feeling again, you tend to notice the rough patches sooner.
