How to Ease Tooth Pain?

3 min read

Tooth pain has a way of showing up when you least expect it. It might start when you’re lying in bed trying to sleep or right after you take a bite of something. No matter when it happens you just want it to go away.

One of the things you can do is rinse your mouth with warm salt water. Mix half a teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water. Swish it gently around the area that hurts then spit it out. Don’t swallow it. The warmth helps soothe the pain and keeping the area clean is important when your gums are irritated.

Start with Some Simple Steps

A cold compress on your cheek can help reduce swelling and take the edge off. Wrap an ice pack in a towel. Hold it against your cheek for about 15 minutes. Then take a break. Let your skin rest before applying it

Painkillers can also help. Ibuprofen is often used for pain and paracetamol works well for many people. Follow the instructions on the label. Don’t take more than what’s recommended. If you’ve been told not to take a medicine don’t use it.

Be Careful About What You Eat

For a day or so let your tooth rest. Choose foods that don’t require much chewing. Hot or very cold foods can trigger sharp pain so let them cool down before eating.

• Warm drinks are better than piping ones especially if your tooth is sensitive to heat.

• A soft meal at dinner can help you avoid biting the sore side.

• Avoid foods for now. They can make some kinds of tooth pain much worse.

Do Delay Finding the Cause

Pain relief helps but it doesn’t fix the problem. A cavity might need a filling. A cracked tooth could need a kind of treatment. An infection needs dental care, not just more painkillers.

Don’t put aspirin directly on your tooth or gum. It can irritate the tissue. Cause more trouble. That old home remedy isn’t worth the risk.

Know When to Get Help

• Swelling in your face or jaw needs attention especially if it keeps growing.

• A fever, with tooth pain is a warning sign. Don’t just. See what happens.

• Trouble breathing or swallowing is serious. An infection can. You may need urgent care.

Give the Tooth a Break

Sometimes the best thing you can do tonight is boring. Keep the area clean. Don’t chew on that side. Use pain relief only if it’s safe for you.. Make sure to get dental care if the pain doesn’t go away.
