How Often Should You Go to the Dentist?

2 min read

Most people should visit a dentist about every six months. It sounds boring. Honestly it is not the most exciting appointment you’ll make this year.. That regular visit gives your dentist a chance to find small problems before they become painful.

Why Twice a Year Became the Common Advice

The six-month habit stayed because dental problems don’t always show up. A cavity can form quietly. Gum disease can also get worse without pain especially in the beginning. By the time something starts to bother you the problem may already be serious.

Do You Really Need Every Six Months?

Not always. If your teeth and gums are always healthy your dentist might suggest time between visits.. Don’t decide that on your own just because your last visit was fine.

On the hand some people need to see the dentist more often. This is especially true if you’ve had cavities lately or you’re getting treatment for gum issues. Your dentist might suggest visits every three or four months while things are being fixed.

When You Shouldn’t Wait for Your Next Checkup

• A new lump or swelling that doesn’t go away needs a checkup even if its not painful.

• Bleeding gums are worth talking about at your appointment especially if it happens often of just once in a while.

• A broken or loose tooth needs attention away. Waiting for your checkup is not a good idea here.

• Bad breath that doesn’t get better with cleaning is another reason to get checked.

What About Kids?

Kids need dental care too and their schedule shouldn’t depend on when their adult teeth come in. Early visits help dentists see how the mouth grows and find problems while they’re still easy to fix.

So How Often Should You Go?

For people twice a year is a good starting point. If your dentist says you need to come in every months follow that plan. If your mouth has been healthy, for years they might decide you don’t need to come in often.
