How Long Does Dry Socket Last?

3 min read

Dry socket usually lasts around 7 to 10 days though the pain can feel like it goes on forever when you’re going through it. Most people find that the worst pain comes a days after the tooth removal not right after the procedure.

The good news is that dry socket does heal.. Your dentist can help manage it making those tough days much more bearable.

When Does Dry Socket Start?

Dry socket often begins between one and three days after a tooth extraction. At first it might seem like healing. But then the pain doesn’t go away it gets worse instead.

That shift is important to notice. Normal pain after a tooth extraction should ease over time. With socket the pain often becomes deep and throbbing. It can spread to your ear or jaw on the side.

Why Does It Take Long To Heal?

After a tooth is removed, a blood clot forms in the socket. That clot acts like a bandage protecting the bone and nerves below while new tissue grows. If the clot breaks down soon or comes out the area is exposed. That makes it more sensitive and painful.

The socket needs time to grow tissue and cover the exposed area. There’s no fix. It can be frustrating. It’s part of the healing process.

What Can Make Dry Socket Longer?

Smoking is one of the things to avoid during healing. The suction from smoking can pull the clot loose and tobacco slows healing. Using a straw is another habit to avoid—same reason.

Your dentist might place a medicated dressing inside the socket. This often brings relief. It protects the exposed area. Helps calm the pain while healing continues.

A few simple habits go a way during recovery

• Clean gently around the extraction site. Don’t scrub directly over it—that can disturb the healing.

• Eat foods. They’re easier to chew and less painful when the area’s sore.

• Avoid smoking. Honestly one day without it is much better than weeks of pain.

When Should You See a Dentist?

If your pain gets worse after the extraction of improving don’t just accept it as normal. A dentist can check if it’s socket or something else.

What If It Still Hurts After 10 Days?

Some soreness can linger, especially if the extraction was tough.. Strong pain or pain that gets worse after about a week should be checked by a dentist.

Pain that won’t go away isn’t something you have to power through. Get it checked.
