How Do I Know If I Have Dry Socket?

3 min read

A tooth extraction hurts a bit. That’s normal.. If the pain becomes worse a few days after the tooth was taken out instead of slowly getting better dry socket should be checked more carefully.

The main sign is time. Dry socket usually happens around two to five days after an extraction. The pain can feel deep. It can beat like a drum and it might move towards your ear, temple or jaw on the same side.

What Does Dry Socket Feel Like?

Pain from an extraction usually gets better as the days go by. Dry socket is different. You might wake up thinking the area where the tooth was feels much worse than it did the day. That change is important.

Some people also notice a taste or bad breath that does not go away even after brushing. The empty hole might look different too. Of seeing a dark blood clot covering the spot you might see something pale or white deeper inside the hole. Sometimes the bone underneath can be seen.

The Pain Is Usually the Main Sign

Pain is what people usually remember. It can be strong enough to stop you from sleeping or make things like eating feel uncomfortable.. Painkillers that helped before may suddenly not work as well.

A little pain after an extraction is not always socket. Your gums went through a process all. What matters is an increase in pain after you have already started feeling better.

Symptoms That Suggest Dry Socket

• Pain that gets worse after a days especially if it starts to move towards your ear or jaw.

• A hole that looks very empty with the blood clot no covering the area where the tooth was.

• Bad. A bad taste that keeps coming back even after you have cleaned your mouth.

• The deep beating feeling is often more important than soreness around the gum.

What Should I Do If I Think I Have Dry Socket?

Don’t try to look inside the hole or try to pull anything out. That usually makes things worse. Avoid smoking because sucking and smoke can slow down healing.

Your dentist can look at the extraction area. Clean it if needed. They might put a dressing, over the hole to help with the pain while the area heals. Once treated the pain usually becomes easier to handle.

If you have a lot of swelling, a fever, pus, trouble swallowing or trouble breathing don’t think it’s just dry socket. Those signs need dental help.
