Does It Hurt to Have Teeth Pulled?

2 min read

Most people ask this because they’re picturing the worst part. The tooth coming out. Fair enough. It sounds painful. But the part that surprises most people is that you usually don’t feel the tooth being pulled.

What It Actually Feels Like

Before the dentist starts, they numb the area with a local anesthetic. That takes away the sharp pain. You’ll probably feel a quick pinch from the injection, then the numb feeling spreads across your gum and part of your mouth. After that, the dentist checks that you’re fully numb before doing anything else.

During the Extraction

The whole process often feels quicker than people expect. A simple tooth extraction can be done in just a few minutes once everything is numb. Bigger teeth or wisdom teeth sometimes take longer, though you still shouldn’t feel sharp pain. If you do, say something. Dentists would rather stop for a moment than have you try to tough it out.

What Happens After the Numbing Wears Off?

• A little swelling is common, especially during the first day, and it usually settles down before you know it.

• Cold packs help more than people expect. Fifteen minutes on your cheek often makes a real difference.

• Soft food for a day or two. It sounds boring, though mashed potatoes somehow taste better when chewing isn’t an option.

• Skip smoking if you can. I know people hate hearing that, but dry socket is far more annoying than taking a short break.
