Why Are My Teeth Hurting?

2 min read

Tooth pain has a way of taking over your whole day. You try to ignore it while working or eating, then it pops up again the second something cold touches your mouth. Or worse. It keeps you awake when everything else is quiet.

The pain doesn’t always start where you think

A cavity is the first thing most people blame. Fair enough. It’s common. But it isn’t the only answer. A cracked tooth can sting every time you bite down. Gum irritation can make one whole side of your mouth feel sore. Sometimes a tooth is perfectly healthy, yet pain from your jaw ends up feeling like it’s coming from that tooth instead. Bodies are strange like that.

Small problems don’t stay small forever

If a cavity reaches the softer part inside your tooth, the pain usually changes. It stops feeling like a quick zap and starts hanging around. That’s the point where hoping it’ll disappear on its own usually backfires. I don’t think tooth pain is something to “wait out.” It rarely rewards patience.

• Sharp pain after something cold. That often points toward exposed dentin, though your dentist needs to confirm what’s really going on.

• A dull ache that keeps coming back usually means your tooth wants attention, even if it settles down by lunchtime.

• Swelling near the gums, and that deserves respect because infections don’t magically become polite.

• Pain while chewing. Even a tiny crack can make every bite feel oddly risky.

Your daily habits matter more than you think

Grinding your teeth at night puts a surprising amount of pressure on them. Plenty of people don’t even know they’re doing it until they wake up with sore teeth or a tired jaw. Because it happens while you’re asleep, the connection isn’t obvious.

Brushing too hard isn’t helping either. People often believe harder brushing means cleaner teeth.

Sometimes it’s not even the tooth

Sinus pressure can make your upper back teeth ache. A wisdom tooth trying to push through can bother the teeth beside it. Even recent dental work can leave things sensitive for a little while. The source isn’t always where your finger points.
