How to Treat an Ulcer?

2 min read

An ulcer hurts in a way that’s hard to ignore. Eating feels awkward. Talking can get annoying. Even drinking water reminds you it’s there. The first instinct is usually to keep poking at it with your tongue, which almost never helps.

Figure Out What Kind of Ulcer You’re Dealing With

Most people mean a mouth ulcer when they ask this question. Those small sores often heal on their own in about a week or two. But if you’re talking about a stomach ulcer, that’s different. It needs proper treatment because the cause usually sits much deeper than the pain itself.

Here’s the thing. Guessing isn’t a treatment plan. A mouth ulcer that keeps coming back or hangs around for more than two weeks deserves a dental or medical check. A stomach ulcer needs a doctor because it often involves a bacterial infection or regular use of painkillers that slowly damage the stomach lining.

Mouth Ulcers Need Time, But They Also Need a Break

You don’t have to do anything complicated. Just stop irritating the sore. Skip foods that burn on the way down. Brush gently around the area. If the pain is bothering you, a pharmacy gel made for mouth ulcers usually makes eating feel much easier.

• Cold drinks often feel better than hot ones, even if it’s only for a little while.

• Soft meals are worth choosing for a few days because chewing against a sore spot gets old fast.

• If your toothpaste keeps making the ulcer sting, try switching for a week. Some people notice the difference almost immediately.

Stomach Ulcers Need the Right Medicine

This is where people waste time on random home remedies. I wouldn’t. If the ulcer is caused by Helicobacter pylori, your doctor will usually prescribe antibiotics along with medicine that lowers stomach acid. If painkillers caused the problem, stopping or changing them often becomes part of the fix.

And don’t quit the medication halfway through because you feel better. That’s one of the easiest ways to end up back where you started.
