Lower Wisdom Tooth Extraction

2 min read

Why a Lower Wisdom Tooth Gets Removed

Lower wisdom teeth often cause trouble because they grow at an angle or stay partly trapped under the gum. That awkward position makes cleaning difficult. Food can get stuck around the tooth, and irritation tends to follow.

And sometimes the tooth hasn’t caused pain yet. Your dentist may still recommend removal if an X-ray shows that it’s likely to create problems later. Personally, dealing with a troublesome wisdom tooth early is usually better than waiting for a weekend emergency.

Recovery After Lower Wisdom Tooth Extraction

The first day is mostly about leaving the area alone. Bite gently on the gauze your dentist provides. Avoid poking the socket with your tongue because it’s surprisingly easy to keep checking it without thinking.

• Soft food feels much easier at first, especially when chewing near the back of your mouth isn’t appealing.

• No smoking during early healing. It can interfere with the blood clot that protects the extraction site.

• Keep the area clean, but don’t aggressively rinse right after extraction because the socket needs time to settle.

When to Call Your Dentist

Some discomfort after extraction is expected. But worsening pain after a few days deserves attention, especially if the pain seems to spread toward your ear or becomes harder to control. A bad taste or unpleasant smell from the socket can also signal a problem.
