Why Lower Wisdom Teeth Get Infected
The problem often starts because a lower wisdom tooth doesn’t have enough room to come through properly. Part of the tooth can stay under the gum, leaving a small pocket where food and bacteria collect. Because that spot is hard to clean, irritation can build into an infection.
Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore
• A swollen gum at the very back, especially when the tooth is only partly visible, deserves attention rather than another week of hoping it settles.
• Trouble opening your mouth. Not huge trouble, necessarily, just enough that eating suddenly feels awkward.
• Fever or feeling generally unwell is more concerning because the infection may be spreading beyond the gum.
What Treatment Usually Involves
They may clean the area and recommend treatment for the infection. Antibiotics are sometimes prescribed when there are signs that the infection has spread, but they’re not a permanent fix for a wisdom tooth that keeps getting trapped.
When It Becomes Urgent
A mild ache is one thing. Rapidly increasing swelling is different. So is swelling that moves toward your face or neck. Difficulty swallowing or breathing needs urgent medical attention, because an untreated dental infection can become serious.
