Why Lower Wisdom Teeth Decay So Easily
The back of your mouth is simply harder to keep clean. A lower wisdom tooth sits right at the end of the row, where your toothbrush doesn’t always reach properly. Food can also get trapped around the tooth, especially if it has only partly come through the gum.
The Warning Signs
• A dull ache at the very back of the jaw, especially while chewing, deserves attention rather than another week of waiting.
• Cold sensitivity that lingers after the drink is gone can point to deeper decay, though sometimes the cause is something else.
• Food getting trapped beside the tooth. Annoying, yes, but also a pretty useful clue.
What Happens If You Leave It Alone?
Decay doesn’t repair itself. Once the tooth’s outer layer is damaged, the cavity usually keeps moving deeper unless a dentist treats it.
Getting Lower Wisdom Tooth Decay Checked
Until you get it checked, keep the area clean and don’t poke at the cavity. If swelling develops or you have trouble opening your mouth, swallowing, or breathing, get urgent dental care.
