What Happens Before Extraction
First, your dentist checks the tooth and takes dental X-rays to see its position. This matters because a wisdom tooth sitting normally is handled differently from one trapped under the gum or growing at an angle.
Getting You Comfortable
Local anaesthetic is commonly used for wisdom tooth removal. You’ll feel pressure and movement, but you shouldn’t feel sharp pain. Some people also have sedation if they’re particularly nervous or if the extraction looks more involved.
During the Wisdom Teeth Extraction Procedure
Once the area is numb, the dentist loosens the tooth carefully. A straightforward tooth may come out fairly quickly. But an impacted wisdom tooth needs more work because part of it may still be covered by gum or surrounded by bone.
After the Tooth Is Removed
• Swelling is common, especially after a difficult extraction, and it usually settles gradually.
• Soft foods feel much easier at first. Crunchy food can wait.
• A little soreness is expected, but severe or worsening pain deserves a call to your dentist.
How Long Does It Take to Recover?
Recovery depends on how complicated the extraction was. A simple removal often feels manageable within a few days, while surgical extraction can take longer to settle.
You’ll probably notice the swelling most during the early part of recovery. After that, things generally start feeling more normal. And once the socket stops demanding your attention every few minutes, you realise how much you were thinking about it.
