What Happens Before Removal
The appointment starts with a quick check of the tooth and the surrounding gum. Your dentist will ask about your medical history and explain how the removal will work. Because every wisdom tooth sits differently, the plan depends on whether yours has fully come through or is trapped beneath the gum.
Getting Numb
Local anaesthetic is commonly used. You’re awake, but the area becomes numb enough that you shouldn’t feel sharp pain during the extraction. You may notice pressure or movement, though, which feels strange but usually isn’t painful.
The Wisdom Tooth Removal Procedure
If the tooth has grown normally and is easy to reach, the dentist can usually loosen it and remove it directly. A more difficult tooth needs a small surgical procedure. This happens when the tooth is impacted or sitting at an awkward angle.
Recovery After Wisdom Tooth Removal
The first couple of days are usually when you’ll notice the most soreness and swelling. Rest matters. So does following the instructions your dentist gives you, especially during the first 24 hours.
• Soft food feels much easier at first, especially while the area is tender.
• A little swelling is expected, though swelling that keeps getting worse deserves a call to your dentist.
• Avoid smoking because it raises the risk of a painful condition called dry socket.
• Keep the extraction area clean, but don’t aggressively brush directly over it.
When to Contact Your Dentist
Pain should gradually settle rather than suddenly become much worse. If you develop heavy bleeding that won’t stop, severe swelling, fever, or increasing pain after a few days, contact your dentist promptly.
