Before the Tooth Is Pulled
You’ll talk through the procedure before anything starts. Tell your dentist about medicines you take and any health issues that could affect treatment. They’ll also explain the type of anesthesia being used.
Getting Numb
Local anesthesia is common for wisdom tooth removal. You’re awake, but the area around the tooth becomes numb. You might feel pressure or movement during the pulling. Pain shouldn’t be the main sensation.
What Happens During Wisdom Tooth Pulling
If the wisdom tooth is fully visible, the dentist loosens it carefully and removes it with dental instruments. A little pressure is normal. So is hearing some odd sounds. Your brain may make those noises seem far more dramatic than they actually are.
• Pressure rather than sharp pain is what you’ll usually notice once the area is properly numb.
• A small opening in the gum, especially with an impacted tooth, is completely normal and gives the dentist better access.
• You may hear cracking or tapping during the procedure, which sounds strange but doesn’t mean something has gone wrong.
After the Extraction
Once the tooth is out, the dentist cleans the area and checks the socket. Stitches may be needed if the gum was opened. A piece of gauze is usually placed over the area so you can bite down and help the bleeding settle.
Swelling often becomes more noticeable during the first couple of days. Your jaw may also feel stiff. That’s annoying, but normal. Recovery varies depending on how difficult the extraction was.
When Should You Call the Dentist?
Some discomfort is expected. Pain that becomes severe instead of gradually improving deserves attention. The same goes for heavy bleeding, fever, or swelling that keeps getting worse.
