Wisdom tooth removal usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes for one tooth. Some extractions are over in less time. Others take longer, especially when the tooth is stuck under the gum or growing at an awkward angle.

First comes the local anaesthetic. You might feel some pressure as it takes effect, but you shouldn’t feel sharp pain. Once the area is completely numb, the dentist loosens the tooth and removes it.

• A fully erupted tooth may be out within a few minutes, which sounds almost suspiciously quick.
• A buried wisdom tooth takes longer because the dentist has to reach it safely rather than simply loosen it.
• Nervous about the procedure? Tell the dentist beforehand. Sitting there silently while your brain invents problems is rarely helpful.

The position of the tooth matters a lot. So does its shape and how deeply it’s sitting in the jaw. An X-ray gives the dentist a much better idea of what they’re dealing with before treatment begins.
