Single Wisdom Tooth Extraction

3 min read

Having one wisdom tooth removed is a pretty common dental procedure. And if only one tooth is causing trouble, there’s usually no reason to remove the others just because they happen to be there. One tooth. One problem to deal with.

Why Remove Just One Wisdom Tooth?

A wisdom tooth doesn’t always cause problems. Sometimes it grows normally and sits quietly at the back of your mouth for years. But a tooth that comes in at an odd angle can press against the tooth beside it or become difficult to clean, which is where things start getting irritating.

When One Tooth Is Enough

Honestly, I prefer the idea of removing only the problem tooth when the others are healthy. There’s no prize for collecting extra extractions.

Your dentist will usually examine the tooth and take an X-ray before deciding. The X-ray shows how the tooth is positioned and gives the dentist a better idea of what the extraction will involve.

What Happens During the Extraction?

The area is numbed first. You shouldn’t feel sharp pain during the procedure, although you may notice pressure or pushing as the dentist works around the tooth.

Some wisdom teeth come out fairly easily. Others need a more involved procedure because they’re stuck beneath the gum or have roots that make removal awkward. The exact approach depends on the tooth itself.

After the Tooth Is Out

Once the extraction is finished, you’ll bite gently on gauze to help control bleeding. Your mouth may feel strange for a while because of the numbness.

• Soft food feels much easier at first, especially while the area is tender.

• Skip smoking because it can interfere with healing and increase the risk of a painful dry socket.

• Keep the extraction area clean, but don’t aggressively poke it with your tongue or toothbrush.

• Some swelling is expected. If it gets worse rather than better, call your dentist.

• Pain that suddenly becomes severe after initially settling deserves attention, particularly if there’s a bad taste or smell.

How Long Does Recovery Take?

Most people start feeling noticeably better within a few days. The gum itself takes longer to fully heal, though you won’t necessarily notice that happening.

Single wisdom tooth extraction is often surprisingly manageable. The annoying tooth is gone, the pressure disappears, and after a while you stop noticing the gap entirely.

Still, if one wisdom tooth is causing repeated trouble, how many more times do you really want to put up with it?
