How to Keep Teeth White After Whitening

2 min read

Getting your teeth whitened feels great for about five minutes. Then you look at your coffee and wonder if you’ve made a terrible mistake. You haven’t. The trick is to protect the shade you’ve paid for without turning your daily routine into a science project.

Give Your Teeth a Little Break

The first day or two after whitening deserves some extra care. Your teeth can be more sensitive, and the surface is more likely to pick up stains during this early period.

So keep strongly colored foods and drinks to a minimum for a short while. Coffee is the annoying one if you’re used to having a mug first thing. If you do drink it, rinsing your mouth with water afterward is an easy habit that doesn’t require much thought.

Don’t Brush Too Hard

It can be tempting to scrub your teeth because you want that freshly whitened look to stay. Resist it. Brushing aggressively won’t make teeth whiter. It can irritate your gums and wear down enamel over time.

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle pressure instead. Two minutes is plenty. Your teeth don’t need a wrestling match.

Make Stain Control Part of Your Routine

Don’t brush immediately after acidic drinks. Give your mouth some time first. Enamel is better treated gently than attacked every time you finish a drink.

Keep Up With Your Normal Cleaning

Raj noticed this after his whitening appointment. He kept leaving his toothbrush in the bathroom cabinet at night, then stopped reopening the same five tabs every morning to check whether he’d remembered to brush before bed. Once the habit became automatic, his teeth simply looked cleaner.
