Why Are My Teeth Brown?

2 min read

You notice a brown patch when you smile in the mirror. Or maybe your whole smile has slowly gotten darker. Either way, the first thought is usually the same: what happened to my teeth?

Brown teeth have several possible causes, and some are much easier to fix than others. Sometimes the color sits on the outside of the tooth. Sometimes the tooth itself has changed.

Brown Stains Aren’t Always a Big Problem

Surface stains are a very common reason teeth look brown. Coffee is a big one. Tea can do it too, especially if you drink it often. Tobacco leaves stubborn staining behind.

The tricky part is that surface stains can build up so gradually that you stop noticing them. Then one day, the color seems obvious.

Your Teeth Can Change From the Inside

Certain medicines taken while teeth are developing can affect their color. Enamel that has worn down can also make the deeper, naturally yellower part of the tooth show through.

What You Should Do About Brown Teeth

• Surface staining from coffee or tea is often the easier kind to treat, though old stains can take more than one cleaning or whitening session.

• One dark tooth deserves attention. A tooth that changes color on its own isn’t something I’d try to cover up with whitening strips.

• Bleeding gums or heavy buildup around the brown areas can point to a separate dental problem, and that’s worth getting checked rather than scrubbing harder.

• Home whitening isn’t a magic eraser. It won’t repair a cavity or restore a damaged tooth.

So, Should You Worry?

Not necessarily. Brown teeth are common, and sometimes the reason is surprisingly ordinary.

But don’t judge the cause by color alone.
