What Actually Causes the Stains?
The braces themselves usually aren’t staining your teeth. The bigger problem is what happens around them while they’re attached. Brackets create little spaces where plaque can collect, and those spots are harder to clean properly because your toothbrush can’t reach every angle.
Those White Spots Are Different
White spots are one of the most common changes people notice after braces. They often show the exact shape of where plaque sat around a bracket. The surface hasn’t necessarily become dirty. It has changed.
Why Do Some Teeth Look Yellow or Brown?
Not every color change comes from enamel damage. Once braces are removed, surface stains can suddenly become much easier to notice because the tooth has a new shape and there are no brackets distracting your eye.
Drinks and foods with strong pigments can leave surface discoloration, especially when they’re used often. Smoking can also darken teeth. But the bigger issue during orthodontic treatment is usually plaque sitting around areas that were difficult to brush.

Your dentist can also check whether the marks are simple surface stains or signs of enamel damage. That’s worth doing before whitening. Whitening can make some white spots look more obvious for a while, which is not exactly the surprise anyone wants after orthodontic treatment.
So, Should You Worry?
Sometimes the damage started quietly while the brackets were still there.
And maybe that’s the annoying lesson here: a straight smile still needs healthy enamel underneath it.
