How Do You Know If You Have Bad Breath?

2 min read

The Signs Are Usually Pretty Small

You don’t always get a giant warning. Sometimes your mouth just feels dry all morning. Food leaves a strange taste that hangs around longer than it should. You brush your teeth and it still feels a little off an hour later.

A Better Way to Check

There are a few simple ways that work better than guessing.

• Lick the inside of your wrist. Wait a few seconds, then smell it. Odd, yes, but it gives you a better idea than breathing into your hands.

• Your tongue matters. If it has a thick coating that sticks around after you wake up, there’s a fair chance it’s adding to the smell.

• Ask someone you trust. It feels uncomfortable for about ten seconds, then you get a real answer instead of spending weeks wondering.

Sometimes the Cause Isn’t What You Think

People often blame garlic or onions. Sure, those can do it for a while. But bad breath that sticks around usually has a different reason. Plaque builds up. Dry mouth makes things worse. Gum problems can play a part too. Even certain medicines leave your mouth feeling dry enough that the smell hangs on.

What Actually Helps

Brushing matters, but stopping there isn’t enough. Your tongue holds onto bacteria surprisingly well, so giving it a quick clean makes a real difference. Flossing isn’t exciting either, yet food trapped between teeth has a way of hanging around longer than anyone wants to imagine.

I also think fancy mouthwash gets too much credit. It can cover the smell for a bit, then the problem walks right back in because nothing underneath changed.
