dental hygiene
You finally get through a root canal. The numb feeling wears off. Then you bite into lunch and the tooth still feels sore. That catches a lot of people off guard because they expect the pain to disappear the second the treatment is done.
The Area Around the Tooth Still Reacts
Because the ligament around the tooth is full of nerves, you often notice discomfort when you chew. You probably won’t feel the same sharp pain you had before treatment. Instead it feels bruised. That’s a better way to picture it.
Pressure Feels Different
• A little tenderness while chewing is common, especially during the first few days and it usually fades without much fuss.
• If the filling sits slightly high, your dentist can adjust it. That tiny change often makes a bigger difference than people expect.
• Swelling nearby, if there was a deep infection before treatment, sometimes hangs around for a bit. The body doesn’t rush these things.
Healing Doesn’t Follow a Stopwatch
That’s pretty normal. Healing often feels slow until one day you notice the discomfort has quietly stepped into the background. You stop noticing it because your mouth has settled, not because anything dramatic happened.
When the Pain Deserves Another Look
• Pain that wakes you from sleep over several nights. I’d never ignore that.
• A cracked tooth or another hidden problem sometimes shows up after treatment, and that changes what needs to happen next.
Give the Tooth a Little Room
For a short while, go easy on that side if chewing makes it complain. Take the medicine your dentist recommended. Keep brushing because a treated tooth still depends on healthy gums around it. People sometimes baby the area so much they avoid cleaning it, and I don’t love that habit.
