How to Reduce Toothache Without Making It Worse

2 min read

A toothache has a way of taking over your whole day. You try to ignore it. Then it keeps showing up every time you sip something cold or lie down at night. That tiny spot in your mouth suddenly feels like the loudest thing in the room.

Pain Relief That Actually Makes Sense

If the pain is getting in the way of sleeping or eating, take an over the counter pain reliever as directed on the label, unless a doctor has told you not to. You don’t get extra points for trying to tough it out. You just end up tired and cranky.

• Cold on the outside of your cheek, wrapped in a towel, often feels better after ten or fifteen minutes.

• Some people forget this. Don’t put aspirin directly on your gum because it can burn the tissue and leave you dealing with another problem.

• A softer meal for a day, if chewing has turned into a chore, gives the sore tooth a little break without much effort.

Pay Attention to What Sets It Off

Because pain usually has a trigger, notice what changes it. Sweet food. Cold drinks. Biting down. Those little clues matter more than people think, and they’ll help your dentist figure out what’s really going on.

Don’t Wait Too Long

A toothache doesn’t usually disappear because you ignored it. If the pain sticks around for more than a day or two, or your face starts swelling, call a dentist. The longer you wait, the less fun the appointment tends to be.

• Bleeding that won’t settle down deserves attention, even if the tooth itself doesn’t hurt much.

• Fever along with tooth pain is different, and I’d treat that as a reason to get checked sooner instead of hoping tomorrow feels better.
