How to Soothe a Toothache Without Making It Worse

2 min read

A toothache has a way of stealing your attention. You try to watch something. You try to work. Then that dull throb barges back in. The good news is you don’t have to sit there pretending it’ll magically disappear.

Start with the simple stuff

Warm salt water is still one of the best places to begin. Swish it around gently for half a minute, then spit it out. It helps clean the area and often settles irritated gums. Nothing fancy. Just something that usually feels better within a few minutes.

Pain relief that actually makes sense

An over the counter pain reliever works if you follow the directions on the label. Don’t take extra because you’re frustrated. That never ends well. And if the pain wakes you up at night or keeps getting stronger, stop hoping it’ll fade on its own.

Pay attention to what sets it off

Sometimes the ache flares up with something cold. Other times it’s hot food. You don’t need to play detective for hours. Just notice the obvious pattern and avoid poking at the sore tooth for the rest of the day.

• Salt water first, because it’s easy and you probably already have what you need

• Cold on the outside of your face works better than pressing on the aching tooth.

• Soft food, at least for now, and your jaw gets a little break too

• That clove oil trick has fans, though the taste hangs around longer than most people expect

Know when home care isn’t enough

Home remedies are for getting through the moment. They don’t fix a cracked tooth or an infection hiding under the surface. Because of that, seeing a dentist is the move that actually solves the problem instead of pressing pause.

If you notice swelling that spreads across your face, or you have a fever along with the toothache, get professional care as soon as you can. The same goes for pain that refuses to let up after a day or two. You’ll probably feel relieved once someone tells you exactly what’s going on. That feeling matters more than people admit.
