What to Eat After Tooth Extraction?

2 min read

You don’t realize how much chewing matters until someone tells you not to do it for a while. After a tooth extraction, food turns into part of the healing process.

The first day feels a little strange

Soft food wins. Every time. Your mouth has work to do, even if you can’t see it, and forcing crunchy meals into the picture just slows everything down.

• Yogurt, because it’s cool on the sore spot and doesn’t ask your jaw to do much

• Mashed potatoes are filling. They also feel surprisingly comforting when everything else sounds like too much effort.

• A warm bowl of smooth soup, not piping hot though, because that fresh area doesn’t appreciate extra heat

A little more variety comes later

After a day or two, if things are healing the way they should, you can start adding foods with a bit more substance. Scrambled eggs work well. Oatmeal usually goes down easily once it isn’t steaming. Soft pasta is another solid choice if you chew on the opposite side.

Pay attention to temperature too

Cold foods often feel good at first. Ice cream gets all the attention, but plain frozen yogurt or a fruit smoothie eaten with a spoon makes more sense if you don’t want loads of sugar. Later on, warm meals feel better than very hot ones. Your mouth usually tells you what’s comfortable before your brain catches up.

Foods worth avoiding for a bit

Some foods aren’t bad forever. They’re just bad timing. Tiny seeds can get stuck where you don’t want them. Sticky candy hangs around longer than it should. Nuts are another easy one to avoid until the area has closed up.

• Popcorn. Those little bits seem determined to find every awkward place.

• Spicy food isn’t a great idea if the area already feels tender. Give it a few more days.
