What to Eat After Extracting a Tooth?

2 min read

Pulling a tooth is usually the easy part. Figuring out what to eat later is where people get stuck. You’re hungry. Your mouth feels strange. Then someone hands you a bag of chips and suddenly that sounds like the worst idea you’ve heard all week.

Give your mouth an easy job

Right after the extraction, your body is trying to protect the area with a blood clot. Leave it alone. Food should be soft enough that you barely have to think about chewing. The less work your mouth does, the more comfortable those first couple of days usually feel.

Warm food is fine once the numbness wears off. Very hot meals are another story. They just don’t seem worth the risk that early, if you ask me.

Foods that usually feel comfortable

• Smooth yogurt, because it slides down easily and doesn’t ask much from your jaw

• Mashed potatoes work well. Keep them soft and don’t pile on spices during the first day.

• Scrambled eggs, if they stay nice and soft. Dry eggs feel surprisingly annoying.

• A bowl of blended soup. Let it cool first, then take your time instead of rushing through it.

• Oatmeal after it softens properly. Thick or sticky isn’t much fun while the area is healing.

A little patience goes a long way

You don’t have to live on mashed food forever. Most people slowly add more texture over the next few days as the soreness settles down. Listen to your mouth. It tells you pretty quickly when you’ve pushed things too far.

Because everyone heals at a different pace, don’t compare yourself with someone who was eating pizza the next evening. Some people bounce back fast. Others need another day or two.
