Can Pericoronitis Kill You?

3 min read

Pericoronitis can sound scary especially when you hear that an infected wisdom tooth might spread to parts of the body.. Can pericoronitis actually kill you? In rare situations a serious untreated dental infection can become life‑threatening. The important point is that this is unusual especially when treatment begins early.

Pericoronitis occurs when the gum around an erupted wisdom tooth becomes inflamed or infected. Food and bacteria can get trapped under the gum flap where brushing does not reach well. Your gum may feel swollen and sore. Sometimes opening your mouth becomes uncomfortable too.

How Can Pericoronitis Become Serious?

Most cases do not suddenly turn into an emergency. The problem is that an infection does not always stay neatly around the tooth. If a severe infection spreads into the jaw or the tissues around the neck swelling can become more serious.

An infection that affects the spaces around the throat can interfere with swallowing or breathing. That is when a normal wisdom tooth problem turns into something that needs medical attention.

Signs You Should Not Ignore

• Trouble breathing is an emergency. Do not sit around hoping the swelling settles down.

• Swelling spreading towards your face or neck needs dental assessment especially if it is getting noticeably larger.

• A fever with worsening tooth pain can mean the infection is becoming more active.

• Difficulty swallowing particularly when it feels like the swelling is moving towards your throat deserves attention.

What Happens If You Leave Pericoronitis Alone?

Sometimes the symptoms settle for a while. Then return. That is one reason people get caught out. You feel better stop thinking about the wisdom tooth and carry on.

The infection does not always disappear just because the pain does. The gum flap can remain around the tooth giving bacteria another place to collect. Repeated episodes are a reason to have the tooth properly assessed.

Can It Be Treated?

Yes. Treatment depends on what’s causing the problem and how severe the infection is. A dentist may clean around the wisdom tooth. Recommend ways to keep the area cleaner while it settles.

Antibiotics are not automatically needed for every case. They are generally used when there are signs that the infection is spreading or causing widespread illness. If the wisdom tooth keeps causing trouble your dentist may discuss removing the tooth once the infection’s under control.

So Can Pericoronitis Kill You?

In an untreated case a dental infection can become dangerous and potentially life‑threatening.. That is very different from saying that ordinary pericoronitis is likely to kill you.

The sensible approach is quite simple. Do not panic over a wisdom tooth but do not ignore worsening symptoms either. If swelling is moving into your face or neck. You are having trouble breathing or swallowing get urgent help.
