How Many Teeth Do You Have?

2 min read

If you’re an adult, the answer’s usually 32. Not everyone actually has all of them though. Some people never grow their wisdom teeth, others had them removed, so your actual number might be different.

Kids have fewer, a full set of baby teeth is 20, surprisingly small once you realize how much work those tiny teeth do.

Adults Usually Have 32

Adult teeth don’t all show up at once, arrive gradually over years. Most adults have 32 permanent teeth when wisdom teeth are counted in. Front teeth are made for biting, teeth further back have broader surfaces for crushing food.

What About Wisdom Teeth

The four teeth at the very back, usually appear late teens or early twenties, though some people never develop them at all.

Plenty of people get them removed since there’s often not enough room for them to come in properly. Count your teeth and get 28 instead of 32, don’t panic. Missing or removed wisdom teeth, 28’s completely normal.

Kids Have 20 Baby Teeth

Babies aren’t born with visible teeth, but they’re already developing under the gums. First ones usually appear around six months, though no strict schedule every child follows. By around age three, most kids have their full set of 20.

Those teeth matter, help a child chew and speak clearly, and hold space for the adult teeth that’ll eventually replace them.

Why Baby Teeth Fall Out

Temporary, but not pointless. As a child’s jaw grows, permanent teeth underneath start moving into position. Roots of the baby teeth gradually break down, letting the loose tooth fall out.

Does Everyone Have The Same Number

Not exactly. Some adults have 28 since their wisdom teeth never developed or got removed. Some have fewer due to dental treatment or teeth that never formed. Rarely, someone can have extra teeth too.

Twenty baby teeth for a typical young child. Twenty-eight permanent teeth is perfectly common after wisdom teeth removal. Thirty-two is the usual adult number with all four wisdom teeth present, though those back teeth aren’t guaranteed for everyone. A missing tooth deserves attention if lost recently from injury or another dental problem.

Tooth count doesn’t tell you whether your mouth’s healthy though. You can have 32 teeth and still have cavities or gum problems. You can have 28 from removed wisdom teeth and have a perfectly healthy mouth.
