How to Remove Tartar Off Teeth?

3 min read

Feel a hard, rough patch along your teeth, close to the gumline especially, you’re probably dealing with tartar. Annoying part is once plaque hardens into that, brushing harder at home isn’t scraping it off safely.

Tartar’s just hardened plaque. Starts soft and sticky, but left uncleaned, minerals in saliva harden it into a crusty deposit stuck firmly to the tooth. Also irritates the gums, makes them bleed easier.

Why You Shouldn’t Scrape It Yourself

You might see metal scrapers online and think how hard can it be. Pretty hard actually. Your teeth aren’t a kitchen counter, poking around the gumline with a sharp tool can scratch the tooth or cut your gums.

Homemade scraping tricks are a bad idea too. Feels like progress since you can see bits coming away, but you genuinely can’t tell if you’re removing tartar or damaging the surface underneath.

What A Dentist Actually Does

Uses proper instruments to remove the hardened deposits, called scaling. Works around the gumline without needing the force you’d use with a home tool, and checks for signs of gum disease at the same time.

Appointment usually feels quicker than expected too, sit there, get it done, rinse, and suddenly teeth feel smooth again. That rough patch your tongue kept finding just isn’t there anymore.

What You Can Do At Home

Can’t safely dissolve or brush away established tartar, but you can stop new plaque building up and hardening in the first place.

Twice daily brushing’s the boring bit, but it works, fluoride toothpaste and a soft brush rather than attacking your teeth with something harder. Flossing matters too, plaque hiding between teeth gets plenty of time to sit if you skip it. An electric brush can help if you tend to rush, though technique still matters more than the fancy brush itself. Mouthwash has its place, just don’t treat it like a tartar remover, it’s not replacing brushing or flossing.

What About Baking Soda Or Tartar Control Toothpaste

Baking soda gets suggested constantly online. Helps with some surface stains used properly, but won’t safely remove hardened tartar already stuck there.

Tartar control toothpaste helps control plaque and reduce buildup before it hardens. But once the deposit’s already there, toothpaste isn’t making it vanish.

When To Book A Cleaning

See a hard yellow or brown deposit that won’t disappear brushing, make an appointment. Same if gums bleed often, look swollen, or feel tender.

Bad breath that keeps returning is another reason to get checked, especially if better brushing hasn’t fixed it. Sometimes it’s just buildup, sometimes your gums need more attention.

Don’t wait for pain either, tartar itself doesn’t always cause any, so waiting for discomfort isn’t a great way to decide when to get checked.
