How to Stop Gums From Receding?

2 min read

Receding gums usually don’t grow back on their own. Sounds a bit grim, but here’s the good part, you can often stop it getting worse by changing what you’re doing at home and getting the cause checked early.

Trick’s not treating your gums like they’re tougher than they actually are. They aren’t. Scrubbing harder doesn’t make anything cleaner, just irritates the tissue and makes things worse.

Start With How You Brush

Hard bristled brush plus heavy pressure is a bad combination. Use soft bristles and a light hand, aim toward the gumline with small gentle movements instead of sawing back and forth.

Longer brushing sessions don’t fix everything either, two minutes is plenty when you’re actually cleaning along the gumline properly instead of attacking your teeth.

Your Daily Routine Matters

Flossing matters since plaque near the gums can trigger inflammation. An interdental brush works well too if the gaps between your teeth are wide enough.

Find Out Why It’s Actually Happening

More than one cause here. Gum disease’s a big one since inflammation and infection damage the tissue supporting your teeth. Brushing too aggressively’s another. Grinding adds stress around the gumline too, and naturally thin gum tissue makes some people just more prone to it.

Don’t assume your toothbrush’s automatically the villain. Recession keeps progressing, a dentist needs to actually look at what’s going on.

Don’t Ignore Bleeding Or Sensitivity

Bleeding gums aren’t something to accept as normal. Same with swelling or gums pulling away from a tooth. Sensitivity shows up too, especially once receding gum exposes part of the tooth root.

Waiting rarely feels worth it here honestly, early treatment’s usually simpler than dealing with advanced damage later.

What A Dentist Can Actually Do

Gum disease involved, professional cleaning removes buildup you can’t brush away at home. A dentist can check your bite, look for grinding signs, and measure how much the gums have receded.

More advanced cases, a gum specialist might discuss grafting, covering exposed root surfaces and protecting vulnerable areas, though not everyone with recession needs this.

Habits That Keep It From Worsening

Consistency matters more than one intense week and then forgetting about it. Brush gently twice a day, clean between your teeth, keep dental appointments instead of waiting for pain.

Grinding your teeth at night, mention it to your dentist, a night guard might help depending on what’s causing the pressure.
