Why Is My Jaw Clicking?

3 min read

That little click can get annoying fast. Hear it eating, then yawning, and suddenly every bite comes with its own soundtrack.

Usually comes from the temporomandibular joint, TMJ, the one just in front of your ear letting your jaw move. A small cushion called the articular disc sits inside, and if it shifts slightly as you open or close, that’s the click you’re hearing.

Often not much pain involved, and that matters, a clicking jaw alone usually doesn’t mean something’s seriously wrong.

What Actually Causes It

Your jaw does a lot without you thinking about it, talking, chewing, yawning. Clenching during the day or grinding at night just adds extra work on top.

The disc inside can slip slightly forward and move back as you open your mouth, that’s the movement making the pop or click.

Stress plays a part too, not because it damages your jaw directly, but tense people clench without realizing it, might catch yourself doing it at your desk.

Is Clicking Without Pain A Problem

Often not. Jaw clicks but opens normally, doesn’t hurt, isn’t getting stuck, no need to panic over the sound alone. Plenty of people have jaw noises and never develop anything serious. Don’t spend all day testing it either, that just irritates it more.

When It Needs More Attention

Changes when it comes with pain or reduced movement. Jaw shouldn’t regularly hurt chewing, shouldn’t feel like it’s catching or locking.

Watch for pain around the joint, especially chewing, though a dull ache near the ear’s easy to mistake for something else. Mouth not opening as far as usual matters more than the noise itself. Jaw getting stuck open or closed even briefly deserves attention. Headaches or facial tenderness, particularly with nighttime clenching.

If it suddenly gets very painful after an injury, get medical care rather than waiting it out.

What You Can Actually Do

Give your jaw a break. Don’t chew gum for hours, don’t deliberately stretch wide just to test the click. Notice yourself clenching, let your teeth separate and relax the jaw.

Softer foods help temporarily if chewing hurts, don’t need to live on soup though, just calm things down.

Grinding at night, talk to a dentist, a properly fitted night guard protects your teeth from the forces involved, though it’s not a universal fix for everything TMJ related. Heat over the sore area can feel soothing too, comfortably warm rather than painfully hot.

When To See A Dentist Or Doctor

Clicking keeps happening but no pain, mention it at your next visit, might be nothing needing treatment. But don’t ignore a painful or locked jaw, a dentist or specialist can examine how it moves and check for tenderness or grinding signs.

Biggest mistake’s assuming every click needs fixing. Some clicks are just noises your joint makes, trying to force silence can become its own problem.
