dental hygiene
Tooth pain takes a way of taking over your day. You notice it while eating. Then while drinking something. Then somehow you think about that tooth while trying to sleep.
The quickest relief usually comes from dealing with the tooth pain while figuring out what is causing it. A saltwater rinse is a place to start. Mix salt into water and gently swish it around your mouth before spitting it out. Do not swallow it.
Things That Can Calm Tooth Pain
Cold can make a sore tooth angry. A cold compress against the outside of your cheek often does the opposite. Wrap an ice pack in a towel. Hold it there for short periods. It can reduce swelling. Make the area feel less intense.
Over the counter pain relief is another option. Ibuprofen is often useful for tooth pain because it also reduces inflammation while paracetamol can reduce pain. Follow the instructions on the packet. Do not take more than the recommended amount.
A Few Small Changes Help
• Warm saltwater rinses are easy and soothing especially when your gums feel tender around the painful tooth.
• Cold foods can sting badly so stick with foods that’re not extreme in temperature until things settle down.
• Sleeping slightly raised can feel better at night especially when lying flat seems to make the throbbing more noticeable.
• Be gentle with brushing around the spot. You still need to clean your teeth just do not attack the area as if it were offended.
Don’t Ignore What the Pain Is Telling You
Pain relief is not the same as fixing the tooth. A cavity can hurt because decay has reached deeper into the tooth. An infection can cause pressure and swelling. A cracked tooth can also produce pain when you bite down.
So if the tooth pain keeps returning gets worse. Lasts more than a day or two book a dental appointment. Waiting for the tooth pain to disappear completely is not a plan when the cause is still sitting there.
When You Need Help Quickly
Some symptoms should not be brushed aside. Facial swelling deserves prompt attention. So does a fever alongside tooth pain. Trouble swallowing or breathing is more urgent. Needs immediate medical care.
If the tooth pain suddenly disappears after being severe do not automatically assume the tooth has healed. Sometimes the nerve inside a damaged tooth stops responding while the underlying problem remains.
What About Home Remedies?
Clove oil is mentioned a lot. It can provide temporary relief for some people but I keep it as a minor option rather, than the main plan. Putting oils directly onto your gums can irritate them.
Warm saltwater is the choice. It is also the one I reach for first because it is simple and unlikely to create another problem.
