dental hygiene
Bad breath usually starts with something that’s in your mouth that should not be there for long. This is often because bacteria are eating leftover food or plaque. Sometimes the smell keeps coming because the real reason is not fixed.
Start With Your Mouth, Not a Mint
Brush your teeth two times a day. Take your time near the gums. Then clean your tongue. This part is often missed, even though the tongue can hold a lot of bacteria.
Flossing is important too. Food stuck between your teeth can start to smell especially if the same area is always missed. A daily clean between the teeth makes a difference.
Don’t Forget Your Tongue
A tongue scraper is useful if your tongue has a coating. Gently scrape from the back to the front. Don’t try to clean it like you are cleaning a pan. Your tongue does not need that kind of force.
Drinking water helps because a dry mouth gives bacteria an easy place to grow. If your mouth feels dry all day look at that of always reaching for breath mints.
Look at What You’re Doing Every Day
Some habits make breath last longer. Smoking is one of them. So is sleeping without brushing your teeth
• Drink water all day. A dry mouth feels bad anyway. The extra moisture helps things stay clean.
• Sugar-free gum after meals can make your mouth feel better especially when you can’t brush.
• Floss before going to bed even if you are tired and want to go to sleep is worth making a habit.
• Mouthwash has its place. I would not use it to hide bad brushing. Fresh mint over a problem does not really help.
Sometimes Your Gums Are the Problem
Bleeding gums, swelling or pain need attention. Gum disease can cause breath that lasts and the smell will not go away just because you change toothpaste.
When Cleaning Isn’t Enough
Cavities, gum disease, a tooth or problems with a dental appliance can all cause bad breath. That is when seeing a dentist is important.
If your breath is still bad even with good oral care do not keep buying stronger mints. A dentist can check for a cause that you cannot see yourself.
Give It a Proper Chance
Bad breath often gets better once your daily cleaning becomes regular. You do not need a plan. Brush properly. Clean, between your teeth. Clean your tongue. Drink water.
