dental hygiene
Periodontal disease begins when plaque lingers around the gums for long. Plaque is a film full of bacteria. If plaque is not removed correctly it can harden into tartar and brushing alone cannot move it. The gums then become irritated and swollen.
However the first stage, called gingivitis does not automatically mean that you will develop periodontal disease. The real problem begins when inflammation is left untreated and starts harming the tissues that hold your teeth in place.
How Plaque Turns Into Gum Disease
Your mouth contains bacteria. Most of the time that is normal. Trouble starts when plaque accumulates along the gumline and between teeth in places where your toothbrush misses.
Tartar Makes Things Worse
When plaque hardens into tartar the surface becomes rougher and gives bacteria places to cling.. Because tartar sits tightly against the teeth attempting to scrub it away harder usually is not the solution.
A professional dental cleaning is the choice. Trying to remove tartar with household tools is one of those ideas that sounds smart until your gums start bleeding.
Other Things That Raise the Risk
• Smoking is a risk. It affects the gums. Can also make early warning signs less obvious.
• Diabetes matters because controlled blood sugar can make it harder for the body to control gum infection.
• Hormonal changes can leave gums sensitive so brushing suddenly feels like it is irritating everything.
• Some medicines cause mouth and less saliva means your mouth loses some natural protection.
• Genetics can also play a part especially if gum disease runs in your family and you seem to develop problems despite taking care.
Your Daily Routine Matters
Flossing is often the thing people skip. I understand.. Bacteria sitting between teeth do not care how good your toothbrush is.
Brushing twice a day does not mean much if you rush through it for only thirty seconds. Take the time to clean around the gumline gently. Cleaning between the teeth matters as much.
Can Stress Cause Periodontal Disease?
Stress does not simply create disease out of nowhere.. Long periods of stress can affect habits and immune function and this can make existing gum problems harder to manage.
When Gum Disease Needs Attention
Bleeding gums are not something you should automatically accept as normal. Swelling, persistent bad breath gums pulling away from the teeth or teeth that start feeling loose deserve a check.
Because periodontal disease can progress without causing pain waiting until something really hurts is not a good test. By that time the supporting bone, around a tooth may already be affected.
