How Long Does Dry Socket Last?

2 min read

Usually 7 to 10 days, though it depends how fast things settle after treatment. Pain often gets worse a few days in rather than better. Annoying when you thought the extraction was already behind you.

Most people feel better fast once a dentist treats it. Without treatment, pain can drag on longer, enough to mess with sleep and eating. Good news, it usually heals completely.

When It Starts

Doesn’t usually show up right after the extraction. Kicks in somewhere between one and five days later. First day feels fine, then suddenly there’s a deep throbbing ache.

Happens when the blood clot protecting the socket breaks down too early, leaving bone and nerves exposed. That’s why it feels so much deeper than normal soreness.

How Long The Pain Sticks Around

Worst of it usually lasts a few days. Once it’s properly treated, it eases fast, though some tenderness lingers while new tissue grows in.

A dentist cleans the socket and places a medicated dressing, that’s usually the turning point. Waiting it out through real pain isn’t a great plan.

What It Feels Like

Deeper than normal extraction pain, can spread toward the ear, temple, or jaw on the same side. Often a bad taste or breath that wasn’t there before too.

People expect extraction pain to just steadily fade, so they end up ignoring pain that suddenly changes instead of getting it checked.

What Slows Healing

Smoking’s a big one, interferes with healing and raises the risk of complications. Vigorous rinsing or poking at the socket can dislodge the clot before it settles too.

Follow your aftercare instructions, especially the first few days. Don’t poke the socket with your tongue or fingers out of curiosity either.

When To See A Dentist

If pain gets severe or keeps building after a few days, call your dentist. Also worth checking if it’s spreading toward your ear or jaw, or there’s a strong bad taste or smell.

Dragging on longer than expected without improving isn’t just “slow healing,” get it looked at.

It’s painful but not usually dangerous once treated. Once treatment kicks in though, things settle fast, you eat normally, sleep properly, and stop thinking about that socket every five minutes.
