dental hygiene
Start by rinsing your mouth with salt water. Mix half a teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water and swish it gently for around 30 seconds before spitting it out. Don’t make the water painfully hot. You’re trying to calm the area not cook it.
Start With Gentle Care
Brushing might be the thing you want to do when your gums hurt but skipping it usually makes things worse. Plaque keeps building up along the gumline, which can increase irritation. Use a bristled toothbrush and make small gentle movements instead of scrubbing hard.
Floss too. If food is wedged between your teeth removing it can make the sore spot feel noticeably better. The trick is to ease the floss between the teeth than snapping it down into the gums.
Try a Warm Salt Water Rinse
• Warm, not water is the point here. Your gums shouldn’t feel more irritated afterward.
• Thirty seconds of swishing is enough and you don’t need to keep repeating it every few minutes.
Ease the Pain While Your Gums Settle
A compress against the outside of your cheek can take the edge off if the area feels swollen or tender. Wrap something in a cloth and hold it against your cheek for short periods. It feels quicker than sitting waiting for your mouth to decide its had enough.
Over-the-counter pain relief can also help when gum pain is making normal activities uncomfortable. Follow the label directions. Avoid medicines that aren’t suitable for you. If you’re unsure what you can safely take ask a pharmacist.
Watch What You Eat
Give the area a break for a day or two. Hot food can sting. So can something spicy. Hard foods are another annoyance because they keep pressing against tender gums.
Softer foods are easier while the pain settles.. Drink plenty of water. Keeping your mouth from getting dry just makes everything feel less unpleasant.
Find Out Why Your Gums Hurt
If your gums bleed regularly when you brush look swollen or stay sore despite cleaning book a dental appointment. Persistent pain deserves a look.
Know When Gum Pain Needs a Dentist
