Look for Changes in Your Gums
Start with the mirror. Pull your lip back. Look at gums for a moment. If gums are swollen or look darker red than usual something may be happening. Tenderness is another clue especially if it keeps coming
Bleeding is one of the signs people notice. You might see pink or red on your toothbrush after brushing. Bleeding can also appear when you floss. Do not stop flossing because gums bleed. Stopping flossing usually makes the problem harder to solve.
Watch What Happens to Your Teeth
Gum disease can change how teeth feel too. You might notice that a tooth feels loose or that bite does not seem the same. Gums can also start pulling from teeth making teeth look longer than before.
Some signs are easy to spot:
• Blood on toothbrush after brushing especially when it keeps happening instead of just once.
• Gums that look puffy or red. If gums also feel sore do not brush that off as normal.
• Bad breath that stays even after you have cleaned teeth, which is especially irritating when you cannot find where it comes from.
• Teeth that seem loose or have changed position. That is a sign getting checked instead of waiting for another month.
• Receding gums, with more of the tooth showing near the gumline. Sometimes you notice this in mirror before anything actually hurts.
Pain Isn’t a Test
Early gum disease can cause bleeding and swelling without much pain at all. So if gums bleed regularly but do not hurt that does not mean everything is fine. Honestly waiting for pain is a way to judge gum health.
What a Dentist Can See That You Can’t
Looking in mirror is useful. It does not tell you the whole story. Dentist checks the gumline. Measures the spaces between gums and teeth to see if those spaces have become deeper.
Dentist can also check for plaque and tartar that you cannot remove properly at home. If there are concerns about bone that supports teeth, dental X-rays can show changes that’re not visible during a normal look in mirror.
So Should You Get It Checked?
If gums bleed regularly look swollen. Have started pulling away from teeth book a dental appointment. Do not wait for problem to become painful.
If teeth feel loose or you notice a sudden change, around gums get checked sooner rather than later. Gum disease is not particularly mysterious. Mouth often gives you signs. The awkward part is admitting that you have been noticing them for weeks.
