Start by Calming the Pain
A compress on the outside of your cheek is one of the easiest ways to try. Wrap an ice pack in a towel and press it on the spot for about 15 to 20 minutes. Then let your skin rest. The lessens swelling and numbs the spot so the pain feels less sharp.
Warm salt water rinses are another trick that works well. Mix half a teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water. Swish it gently around the spot and spit it out. Do not scrub the wisdom tooth hard with a toothbrush when the gum is already swollen. That usually makes the irritated area feel worse.
Pain Relief That Makes Sense
If you can use them safely over-the-counter painkillers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol can ease wisdom tooth pain. Follow the dose on the package. Do not take more than recommended. If you have health conditions take medicines or are not sure which painkiller is safe for you ask a pharmacist or dentist first.
Keep the Area Clean Without Picking at It
Food that gets stuck around an erupted wisdom tooth is a common reason the spot stays sore. The back of your mouth is awkward enough without trying to look at it every ten minutes.
Brush around the wisdom tooth with a soft toothbrush. Rinse after eating if food tends to collect. If you can reach the spot comfortably cleaning it matters because bacteria around the gum can lead to inflammation and infection.
Know When Wisdom Tooth Pain Needs a Dentist
Temporary relief is useful but recurring wisdom tooth pain deserves attention. A wisdom tooth may not have room to come through properly. It can become partially trapped beneath the gum, which creates a pocket where food and bacteria collect.
– Pain that keeps coming even after it settles for a while deserves a proper check rather, than another round of home remedies.
– Swelling around the jaw or face is more concerning, especially when it keeps getting worse.
– A bad taste or discharge near the wisdom tooth can point toward infection so do not simply wait for it to disappear.
– Trouble swallowing or breathing is urgent. Get help immediately rather than trying to manage it at home.
What Actually Stops the Problem?
If the wisdom tooth has room to come through normally and the gum settles down careful cleaning and occasional pain relief may be all you need.. Some wisdom teeth keep causing trouble because they are positioned badly or do not have enough space.
In those cases a dentist may take an X-ray to see what is happening below the gum. Depending on the position and condition of the wisdom tooth they may recommend monitoring it or removing it.
