How to actually get rid of plaque
Plaque’s that sticky film building up on your teeth all day. Won’t notice it at first. Leave it long enough though, it hardens into tartar, and that’s not something brushing fixes anymore.
Good news, fresh plaque’s easy to deal with. Just needs consistency.
Brush better, not harder
Twice a day, soft bristled brush, fluoride toothpaste. Slight angle toward the gum line, gentle movements, not scrubbing like you’re removing paint off a wall.
Don’t rush it either. Two minutes, actually reaching the back teeth and the spots near the gums, that’s where plaque likes to hide.
Between the teeth matters too
A toothbrush just can’t reach every gap. Flossing gets into those spaces the bristles miss entirely.
If floss feels awkward, try an interdental brush instead. Whatever you’ll actually use daily beats the perfect method sitting untouched in the bathroom.
Floss before or after brushing, doesn’t matter much, just do it daily, especially around crowded teeth. Mouthwash is extra, not a replacement for the actual cleaning.
What if it’s already hardened
This is where people get stuck. Plaque starts soft, but once it hardens into tartar, no amount of brushing harder does anything.
And don’t try scraping it off yourself with a pin or whatever’s in the drawer. Good way to damage the gums or scratch the tooth, no upside there.
Keeping it from coming back
Plaque forms because bacteria feed on sugar and starch left behind after eating. Don’t need to obsess over every snack, but frequent sugary stuff makes it harder to stay ahead of.
Water after meals helps. So does brushing consistently instead of skipping days and trying to make up for it with one aggressive session.
