Why Are My Gums Bleeding?

3 min read

You spit, see blood, kind of freeze for a second. Then you shrug it off because hey, it doesn’t hurt. Most people do this. But here’s the thing, gums that are actually fine don’t bleed like that. Ever, really.

Nine times out of ten it’s plaque. That sticky bacteria stuff that hangs around your gumline. Leave it a few days, gums get puffy and annoyed, start bleeding way easier than they should. Not a huge deal at this stage honestly.

Maybe It’s Just How You’re Brushing

Switched to a new firmer brush recently? That’ll do it. Or started flossing again after months off? Also does it. Even just pressing too hard with a normal brush causes this.

And look, scrubbing harder isn’t cleaning better. It’s just irritating gums that are already unhappy. Soft brush, light hand, that’s really it.

This Has a Name, Gingivitis

Early gum disease basically. Red, puffy, bleeds when you brush. The decent news, it usually clears up once you clean better and get a proper cleaning done. Not the end of the world.

But if it just keeps happening week after week, don’t keep telling yourself it’s “just gingivitis.” Left alone long enough it can actually start affecting the bone under your teeth, not just the gum surface.

Sometimes It’s Not Even About Brushing

Some meds thin your blood a bit, makes gums bleed easier. Hormones do something similar. Smoking messes with gum health in general and makes it harder to catch problems early too. Even a vitamin thing sometimes, though that’s rarer.

So if you’re doing everything right and it’s still bleeding constantly, worth just asking a dentist instead of guessing at home.

What Actually Helps

Soft bristled brush. Go easy near the gumline instead of scrubbing. Floss too, gently, don’t just snap it down into the gum.

First few days back into flossing feel clumsy, especially if you skipped it a while. Stick with it anyway. Gets easier fast, promise.

If it’s not improving after a couple weeks of doing all this right, that’s your cue for an actual dental visit instead of switching toothpaste brands again.

When To Stop Waiting And Just Go

A little bleeding once isn’t an emergency. Bleeding that won’t quit for weeks is different though.

Loose teeth, swelling that won’t go down, pus near the gum, real pain, gums pulling back from your teeth, any of that means go now, don’t wait around.
