Why Do My Gums Hurt?

3 min read

Gum pain’s surprisingly annoying. Notice it brushing, biting into something crunchy, or sometimes for no obvious reason at all. And once you’re thinking about it, your tongue’s checking the sore spot every few minutes.

Usually a simple cause behind it. Plaque around the gumline irritates the tissue, causes inflammation. Brushing too hard does it too, especially with a firm brush treating your teeth like a kitchen counter.

Common Reasons Behind It

Gingivitis is one of the first things to consider. Plaque builds along the gumline, irritates the gums, they look red or swollen, bleeding during brushing’s a pretty common clue.

But pain doesn’t always mean gum disease. Small cut from sharp food leaves one spot tender for a few days. Food stuck between teeth presses against the gum too, makes it sore.

Think About What Changed Recently

Started brushing harder? Switched toothpaste? Ate something particularly crunchy? Even a new flossing habit leaves gums tender at first if you’re being too rough with it.

When It Needs More Attention

Sometimes sits deeper than irritated tissue. Cavity close to the gumline causes discomfort that feels like it’s coming from the gum itself. Infection around a tooth causes swelling and real pain too.

Wisdom teeth are another common culprit, especially one partly covered by gum tissue. Food gets trapped, tissue gets irritated, and suddenly the back of your mouth’s all you can think about.

Signs Worth Watching For

Swelling that keeps growing, especially around one tooth, deserves a dental check rather than another day of hoping it disappears. Bleeding every time you brush isn’t something to accept, healthy gums don’t bleed from normal brushing. Bad taste or smell from one sore area can mean infection’s present. Pain hanging around more than a few days, guessing at the cause gets a lot less useful by that point.

What You Can Do At Home

Keep brushing, ease up on the pressure. Soft brush’s the better choice, gentle movements around the gumline are enough to clean it properly.

Floss carefully around the painful spot rather than avoiding it entirely. Something’s wedged there, removing it can make the area feel better surprisingly fast. Warm salt water rinses soothe irritated gums for a bit too.

So Why Do They Actually Hurt

Hurt once from biting something awkward, usually easy to explain. Persistent pain’s different, gums are telling you something’s irritating them, and sometimes the cause is sitting around a tooth you can’t even see.
