dental hygiene
Already got a cavity, brushing harder isn’t making the hole disappear. Decay’s already damaged the tooth, dentist needs to check how deep it’s gone and decide what fixes it. Annoying, sure. Waiting usually just makes it bigger.
Can You Fix It Yourself
Very early decay’s different. Enamel’s only just started losing minerals, no actual hole yet, good oral care can sometimes stop it progressing further. Fluoride’s especially useful there, strengthens weakened enamel back up.
Proper cavity’s a different story though. Can’t brush a hole out of your tooth, home remedies aren’t rebuilding missing tooth structure. Rubbing random things onto the tooth is usually more distracting than helpful honestly.
What To Do While You Wait
Keep brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste. Clean between your teeth too, food and plaque sitting around the damaged area isn’t doing you any favors.
Fluoride toothpaste morning and night, gentle brushing rather than attacking the tooth. Sugary snacks worth cutting back, especially grazing on them all day. Tooth’s sensitive, stick with food that doesn’t set it off, avoid chewing directly on that side.
How Dentists Actually Treat It
Depends how far the decay’s traveled. Small cavity’s usually just a filling, dentist removes the decayed part and fills the space, tooth works normally again.
Decay’s reached the pulp inside, things get more involved. Might need a root canal since the infected tissue has to be removed before sealing and restoring the tooth.
If It’s Really Deep
Badly damaged tooth sometimes needs a crown after treatment. Tooth can’t be saved, extraction gets considered, though dentists generally try to preserve a natural tooth whenever that’s possible.
Don’t Wait For It To Hurt
A friend of mine noticed a tiny dark spot on a back tooth but didn’t think much of it for a while. Finally booked an appointment, turned out to just need a filling, nothing dramatic at all.
Pretty common actually. Cavities don’t always hurt at first. Pain shows up, decay’s often already deeper than you’d hoped by then.
Spotted a hole, dark area, rough patch, or food constantly getting stuck around one tooth, get it checked. Early treatment’s usually a lot simpler. Nobody really needs another reason to spend an afternoon at the dentist anyway.
