Halitosis is just the medical term for persistent bad breath. Almost everyone wakes up with less than fresh breath sometimes, but halitosis sticks around and usually has an underlying reason. Can be embarrassing too, especially wondering if other people have noticed.
Smell usually comes from bacteria in the mouth. Break down food particles and other material around teeth and tongue, produce foul smelling compounds. Tongue’s often involved since its rough surface gives bacteria plenty of places to settle.
What’s Actually Causing It
Morning breath’s probably the most familiar example. Saliva drops while you sleep, mouth gets drier, bacteria become more noticeable. Drink water, brush your teeth, smell usually fades quickly.
Persistent halitosis needs a closer look though. Plaque buildup’s a common cause, especially along the gumline or between teeth. Gum disease creates an unpleasant smell too as gums get inflamed and bacteria collect around them.
Your Tongue Matters A Lot
Coated tongue holds onto bacteria producing bad smelling gases. One reason gently cleaning it makes your mouth feel noticeably fresher. Scraping harder isn’t better though, your tongue isn’t a kitchen worktop.
Dry mouth’s another big one. Saliva naturally washes away food debris and controls bacteria, less of it gives odor a chance to build up. Dehydration plays a part, some medications cause dry mouth as a side effect too.
When To Actually See A Dentist
Doesn’t improve with regular brushing and flossing, book an appointment. Dentist looks for plaque buildup, gum problems, decay, or another oral cause.
Pay attention too if gums bleed regularly or feel sore. Loose teeth are another reason to get checked. Persistent mouth dryness deserves attention as well, especially without an obvious reason behind it.
Can It Actually Be Treated
Depends on the cause. Improving daily hygiene’s a good starting point. Brush twice daily, clean between your teeth so bacteria don’t get comfortable in spots a toothbrush misses.
Tongue cleaning’s worth doing, especially noticing a coating sitting on the surface regularly. Water helps when your mouth feels dry, particularly that sticky mouth feeling during the day. Dental cleaning removes hardened plaque brushing at home just can’t shift. Sugar free gum’s handy after meals, chewing encourages saliva flow, exactly what a dry mouth needs.
