Does Everyone Get Wisdom Teeth?

3 min read

Some people grow all four, some just one or two, some never develop any at all. Kind of strange when you think about it, your mouth can just skip them entirely.

Wisdom teeth are the last set of teeth all the way at the back, usually showing up sometime in the late teens or early twenties, though the timing’s different for everyone. Some people feel pressure or soreness when they come in. Others find out years later from a random dental X-ray that they’d been sitting back there quietly the whole time.

Why Some People Never Get Them

Comes down to how humans have changed over time really. Ancestors had bigger jaws and actually needed those extra teeth for tougher food. Modern jaws tend to be smaller, so there’s not always room left for those teeth to come in properly.

Genetics plays a big part too, if your parents never had wisdom teeth you might not either. But there’s plenty of exceptions, someone can still get them even when their family history suggests otherwise.

Missing Ones Isn’t Actually Weird

A lot of people assume missing wisdom teeth means something went wrong somewhere, it really doesn’t. Some mouths just never form those tooth buds to begin with.

No wisdom teeth at all sounds unusual but it’s actually a pretty common variation. Sometimes one or two show up while the rest never form, which tends to surprise people during a routine checkup. Some stay hidden under the gums, existing but just never pushing through. And some show up way later than expected, taking their time for whatever reason.

If You Do Have Them

Having wisdom teeth doesn’t automatically mean they need to come out, that’s where a lot of people get confused. If they’ve grown in fine and your dentist says they’re healthy, they can just stay put.

Problems usually crop up when there’s not enough room though. A tooth can get stuck under the gum or start pushing against whatever’s next to it. The discomfort’s annoying because it tends to come and go for a while before turning into an actual issue.

Should You Get Them Checked

If you’re around the age they usually show up, a dental checkup clears up the guessing pretty quickly. An X-ray shows whether they’re there, where exactly, and whether they’re likely to cause problems later on.

Since some wisdom teeth cause obvious pain and others just stay hidden for years without a peep, going off how your mouth feels alone isn’t really a great strategy. You could feel completely fine and still have teeth developing back there.
