Why Does My Jaw Click?

2 min read

That little click opening your mouth gets annoying fast. Hear it eating, notice it yawning, then you start testing it for no reason at all.

Usually comes from the TMJ, the joint right in front of your ear letting your jaw move. Small disc inside helps it move smoothly. Disc shifts slightly opening or closing your mouth, you hear a click.

What Causes It

Sometimes pretty ordinary stuff. Clenching your teeth during the day without realizing, grinding at night puts extra pressure on the jaw too. Chewing mostly on one side gives that joint more work than it should have.

Old knock to the jaw changes how it moves. So can bite changes over time. For some people though, there’s just no obvious cause, the joint simply starts making noise on its own.

Is It Normal

Clicks but doesn’t hurt, doesn’t get stuck, opens normally, usually nothing to worry about. Painless click’s often harmless, especially if it hasn’t suddenly changed recently.

Watch for pain around the jaw or ear while chewing, that’s not something to brush off. A jaw catching halfway open is a bigger nuisance than the original click ever was. Headaches near the temples sometimes tag along with jaw tension too, especially with clenching involved. Swelling or tenderness around the joint deserves an actual look rather than more self-testing.

Could Grinding Be Behind It

Quite possibly. Grinding and clenching keep jaw muscles working when they should be resting, that repeated pressure irritates the joint over time.

When To Actually See A Dentist

Clicking with pain, or mouth not opening as easily as before, worth a check. Same for a jaw that locks, changes suddenly, or gets hard to move.

What You Can Actually Do

Don’t force the joint around trying to make it click less. Give it a break instead. Softer food helps short term if chewing hurts. Skip the hours of gum chewing too.

Pay attention to clenching. Let teeth stay slightly apart when you’re not eating. Jaw muscles should feel relaxed, not constantly switched on.

Painless clicking with a jaw that works fine, probably don’t need to chase the sound itself. Noisy joint isn’t automatically a damaged one.

But that harmless click coming with pain, locking, or trouble eating, that’s when it’s worth not ignoring anymore.
