dental hygiene
Bad breath can make you suddenly aware of every conversation you have. You lean back a little. You cover your mouth while talking. Maybe you even chew gum before speaking to someone. Annoying.
Start With Your Mouth
Brush your teeth twice a day and take your time with it. Two minutes is a good target. Don’t scrub harder because your teeth aren’t going to reward you for that.
Don’t Forget Between Your Teeth
• A clean tongue often makes a surprisingly noticeable difference, especially if you’ve had a coated tongue for a while.
• Flossing can feel awkward at first, but once it becomes part of your night routine, you’ll barely think about it.
• Mouthwash is fine for freshening your breath, though relying on it alone is a mistake.
Keep Your Mouth From Getting Dry
Saliva helps wash away food and bacteria. When your mouth gets dry, that cleaning system slows down, and bad smells can become much more obvious.
Look at Your Daily Habits
Certain habits make mouth odour harder to control. Smoking is a big one. So is frequently eating sugary food without cleaning your teeth afterwards.
When Bad Breath Doesn’t Go Away
Sometimes the smell sticks around even after you’ve improved your brushing and flossing. That’s when it’s worth seeing a dentist.
Gum disease can cause persistent bad breath. Cavities can too. An infection around a tooth is another possibility, particularly if there’s pain or swelling.
And if your dentist doesn’t find a mouth-related cause, they can point you towards the right next step. You shouldn’t have to spend months masking the smell with mints.
A fresh mouth feels different. You stop noticing it. You talk normally again without wondering if someone else has noticed.
