What Is Gum Disease?

2 min read
It’s an infection in the tissues around your teeth, and it almost never starts with pain. Just a little blood when you brush. You blame your technique and carry on. But bleeding gums aren’t something to shrug off, ever.

The trouble usually begins with plaque. That sticky film builds up when cleaning gets sloppy. Left alone, it irritates the gums, infection follows, and over time it creeps deeper into the stuff holding your teeth in place.

How It Actually Starts

Your mouth has bacteria. Totally normal. The problem starts when plaque stays put too long and hardens into tartar. Brushing can’t remove that. Only a professional can.

Gingivitis Comes First

Early stage gums look red, feel swollen, bleed when you brush or floss. Annoying but good news. This stage usually reverses with better habits and one proper cleaning.

Ignore it and things get messy. Inflammation slides below the gumline and starts damaging tissue and bone.

Then It’s Periodontitis

Now the gums pull away from teeth and form pockets. Bacteria collect in there, pockets are nearly impossible to clean at home, infection settles in for the long haul.

Bone starts breaking down. Teeth feel loose. Your bite feels off. And here’s the cruel part. Sometimes it barely hurts, which makes it way too easy to miss.

Why It Happens

Plaque is the main villain, but habits feed it. Rushed brushing. Skipped flossing. Smoking makes everything worse. Genetics load the dice for some people. And once tartar forms, waiting for it to leave on its own is pointless. It won’t.

Can You Prevent It?

Yes, and it’s boring habits that win. Brush properly twice a day. Clean between your teeth daily. See your hygienist when recommended.

Consistency beats perfection. A simple routine you actually stick to crushes some elaborate plan you abandon after four days.

Gum disease is common, but common doesn’t mean normal. Your gums are the support system for your teeth, and once that breaks down, getting it back is way harder than protecting it.
