Is Root Canal Painful? What You’ll Actually Feel

2 min read

Why the Bad Reputation?

Most of the fear actually comes from the toothache before the root canal, not the treatment itself. When the tissue inside a tooth gets badly inflamed, it hurts a lot because there’s nowhere for it to swell. So oddly enough, the procedure is usually what ends the pain, not what causes it.

Numbing Comes First

Your dentist numbs the area, then checks you’re comfortable before starting. If you still feel anything sharp, say so. There’s no reason to stay quiet through it.

Expect mostly pressure and some movement around the tooth, not sharp pain. Keeping your mouth open for a while gets a bit tiring, sure. But if something hurts, speak up so your dentist can add more anaesthetic.

Root Canal vs Extraction

Neither is really worse, they’re just different. A root canal saves the natural tooth by clearing out the infected tissue and sealing it up. Personally, saving your own tooth is worth it when it’s still possible. It beats replacing it later.

The procedure itself is honestly more boring than painful. You sit, the dentist works, and it’s over.

Should You Be Worried?

If you’ve been told you need one, don’t let the name put you off. An infected tooth doesn’t get better on its own, and waiting usually makes it worse.

The real pain is often the toothache that brought you to the chair in the first place. Once you’re numb, it’s rarely as bad as you imagined.

Still nervous? Fair. But is a few minutes in the chair really worse than another night with a throbbing tooth?
